Summary
A custom variable allows additional information to be imported from supplier commission data. Each variable has a name, type, and an optional note. These variables can be used for commission rules and/or simple information purposes.
- Best practice: Put an example value of the custom variable in the note for the variable
Item variable
An item variable provides additional information on a commission item.
- Available types: Money, Number, Code, Date, Percent, Text
- Examples: "Order date", "Billing month", "Comm. plan", "Call type"
Product variable
A product variable provides additional information on a product.
- Available types: Code
- Examples: "Bandwidth", "Code 1"
- Best practice: Don’t put the word "product" in the name of a product variable.
Type
Each commission variable is a certain type. The type defines what sort of data will be stored in this variable:
- Money. A dollar amount. Example: "$10,000.00"
- Number. An integer. Example: "5"
- Code. Numbers and/or letters. Example: "45E30002"
- Date: A date. Example: "January 1, 2003"
- Percent: A percent. Example: "10%"
- Text. Example: "This was a special deal"
Commission rules
Both item variables and product variables can be used for the bases of a variable based tier structure.
In addition, product variable can be used to make what would otherwise have been a single product into multiple products. These products can then be assigned different commission groups in the schedule.
- Use: Use an item variable to have the commission rate for a product change depending on something in the data.
- Use: Use a product variable when the product name alone does not give enough distinction to divide products up among commission groups.
- Best practice: In most cases an item variable is the better choice. Product variables should only be used when they are required for commission rules.

- Commission variables may be hidden from agent users. Custom variables that aren’t hidden will be seen on the commission item details page and in the commission item downloads for agent users.
