Performance

Summary

The responsiveness of RPM is something we're always improving. In addition, there are some tips you can use to help:

What you can do (short term)

Your browser

  1. If possible use Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) or Chrome (http://google.com/chrome/). Both are faster than IE when using RPM.
  2. If Internet Explorer (IE) is required:
    • Clear your IE file cache.
    • Upgrade (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx) to the newest version if possible
    • If version 6 is required
    • See Internet Explorer 6 for more information

Your computer

Try these tips if you are using Windows. RPM aside, they're good things to do to any computer anyway,

  1. Defragment your hard drive (http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_defragmenter_utility.htm). Over time your hard drive will become slower unless it is defragmented. It is good to run a defragmentation program at least a few times a year and Windows includes one. If you haven't defragmented in a while (or ever) it can take several hours. You can use your computer while it's running, but I recommend letting it run alone i.e. overnight.
  2. Remove any spyware and adware. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials), it's free and effective. In some cases we've been able to significantly improve the Internet speed of a computers with it.

In RPM

  • Try to incorporate the form Archive into your processes.
  • Use a lower "Items per page" setting.
  • Empty the your recycle bin.

What we're doing

We're addressing RPM performance on two fronts.

Brains

Making smarter code. Every version of RPM have includes performance increases. When we have to modify old code for a new feature we look for ways to improve performance. Sometimes development is focused solely on making an existing feature faster. We also keep performance in mind when building new features.

Muscle

Adding more server strength. In addition to upgrading our servers when possible, we have started implimenting a Server farm architecture so that every deployment of RPM can be spread over multiple servers.
